"The First Avenger: Captain America" synopsis revealed

March, 3. 2010.

We recently reported that test casting began on The First Avenger: Captain America and now it seems we have a new synopsis for the film. FeatureFilmCasting.com has recently put out a casting call for The First Avenger: Captain America and included was a synopsis of the film, which you can read below.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment... Operation: Rebirth.

After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

The site also mentioned the previously-mentioned names who tried out for the title role - Chace Crawford, John Krasinski, Scott Porter, Mike Vogel, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Fleuger - and said that a decision on the lead was expected in the next few weeks. It was also said that filming was slated to begin on June 28.

The First Avenger: Captain America will be directed by Joe Johnston from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film is currently set for a July 22, 2011 release date.

Marvel says: "No delays with 'Captain America'"

February, 27. 2010.

Marvel has categorically denied that its Captain America movie is being delayed in response to a fast-spreading internet rumour.

Reports had been speculating that Joe Johnston's film adaptation was on hold following the underwhelming reception for his latest movie The Wolfman.

Reasons for the delay ranged from more time being sought to cast the lead role, to a suggestion that Marvel was looking for a replacement for Johnston.

However, chud.com said that it had been contacted by Marvel representatives who categorically denied the project was in any way delayed or in any trouble.

Captain America: The First Avenger is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 22, 2011.

"Captain America" villain revealed!

February, 6. 2010.

Director Joe Johnston has been out talking to press this weekend for his new movie The Wolfman and most of the discussion has ended up focusing on The First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston spoke with Collider and gave them a lot of details about the direction they're heading with the film. Additionally, ComingSoon confirmed (as did AICN) that the villain in Captain America will be Cap's arch-nemesis Red Skull, the Nazi badass whose head is just a red skull. Now this is the kind of awesome stuff that I like to hear because it's getting me very excited about seeing Johnston's Captain America movie come together.

"Captain America" cast within two weeks

February, 3. 2010.

In a new interview with SCI FI Wire about his forthcoming film The Wolfman, director Joe Johnston spoke candidly about his next project, The First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston talked about the direction in which he wants to take the property, and also admitted that comic books don't necessarily float his boat.

"We need to cast it soon," Johnston said. "We have a very short list, but we're still juggling actors here. I'd say within the next couple of weeks we'll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope."

He added that the project is still "fairly early" in pre-production, but that he expects the cameras will begin to roll by the end of June. "We're getting ready to go to the UK, it looks like," he said.

"While I'm not necessarily a comic-book fan, I think the interesting thing about this guy is that he's a superhero without any superpowers," Johnston said of the source material. "He is the epitome of human perfection. He can't fly and throw tanks around and see through walls and things like that, but he's strong and runs fast."

"And the interesting thing about this guy is that he starts out as a 98-pound weakling and he becomes this Adonis. How does that affect his arc in the story? How does that affect where he goes and what happens to him and everything? I think that's the part of the story that was fascinating for me. And, of course, being a Marvel movie, there's fantastic action scenes in it and all kinds of great stuff. But there's an interesting story there as well."

From his remarks, it sounds as though Johnston's ambivalence towards comics might actually give him a take on the material that's a bit richer. What do you think? Let us know below.

Johnstone updates on "Captain America" status

January, 30. 2010.

While Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is the Marvel movie I’m most looking forward to, I’m also very eager to see what Joe Johnston will bring moviegoers and comic fans with his period piece live-action adaptation of Captain America, the man, the hero, who will lead good against evil in The Avengers.

Two weeks back we reported on some words that director Joe Johnston shared about the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America movie which is set to begin filming this summer. He revealed that it will not be something we’d expect, that it will follow the comics to a certain extent but that it will go off in a completely different direction.

"Captain America" auditions are on the way

January, 28. 2010.

THE CASTING process for Marvel's Captain America movie is under way.

Los Angeles-based up-and-coming actor Anderson Davis, who expressed an interest in the role here on The Geek Files in June last year, tells me auditions are going on at present and that he hopes to try for the role over the next few days.

Davis (pictured), who's an ex-athlete and also a fitness model, says he believes the role should be filled by an unknown. In a later piece I ran here, he responded to comments he had received as a result of the first article.

Recently, actor and model Rick Malambri said he had tried for the part, while Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin says he'd like to wield the shield although his response suggested he hadn't screen-tested or been officially approached.

Amazing fan made poster for "Captain America"

January, 25. 2010.

One of the best thing about the internet for movie fans is the opportunities it gives us to not only interact with other film fans, but also to contribute to the fan experience as a whole.  We see this all the time with fake mash up trailers, but we also see some very gifted people using their artistic talent to get their fellow fans excited.

Without question, one of the most anticipated films for fans of the comic book genre is the forthcoming 'The First Avenger: Captain America'.  Fans of the character have been getting more and more excited even though the film is still well over a year away, but that hasn't stopped DeviantArt user NineTeenPSG from putting together a fantastic (and keep in mind... fake) promo poster for the project.

You can take a look at it below:

Johnston talks about "Captain America" and "Jurassic Park 4"

January, 14. 2010.

Boxoffice Magazine has posted some new comments from The Wolfman director Joe Johnston about his next film, The First Avenger: Captain America, and the possibility of a Jurassic Park 4.

About Marvel Studios' "Captain America," he stated the following:

It's not going to be a Captain America that you expect. It's something different. It is influenced by the comic book, but it goes off in a completely different direction. It's the origin story of Captain America. It's mostly period—there are modern, present-day bookends on it—but it's basically the story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. The great thing about Captain America is he's a super hero without any super powers. Which is why this story, among the hundreds of super hero stories, appealed to me the most. He can't fly, he can't see through walls, he can't do any of that stuff. He's an every man who's been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen—the pinnacle of human perfection. How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically? He was this 98-pound weakling, he was this wimp, and he's transformed instantly into this Adonis. You'd think he got everything he wanted. Well, he didn't get everything he wanted. The rules change at that point and his life gets even more complicated and dire. For me, that's the interesting part of the story. It's got some great action sequences in it and some incredible stuff that we've never seen before. But at the heart of it, it's a story about this kid who all he wants to do is fit in. This thing happens and he still doesn't fit in. And he has to prove himself a hero—essentially go AWOL to save a friend...

He said the following about Jurassic Park 4:

Well, there is going to be a Jurassic Park IV. And it's going to be unlike anything you've seen. It breaks away from the first three—it's essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy. It's going to be done in a completely different way. That's pretty much all I can tell you.

Classic "Captain America" movie goes online

January, 5. 2010.

Captain America is finally available to watch for free! This 1990 low-budget adaptation of the “All American” superhero is now available for online viewing via Hulu. If for nothing else, watch it for the amazing performances by slumming actors Ned Beatty and Ronnie Cox.

The film stars Matt Salinger (son of famed writer J.D. Sallinger), who has been on shows ranging from Damages to Law & Order, in the titular role. Sallinger’s Steve Rogers actually followed pretty closely the original comic story of a young man who is given a super soldier serum and turned into, well…a super soldier for the Allied powers during WWII.

On a mission that leads to him being stuck on a fired missile, he’s seen by two young kids who just so happen to one day grow up to become President and an adviser. He then gets stuck in ice for the 40 years, until one day he’s freed and given the chance to defeat the Red Skull, who in this movie is an Italian experimental reject – sort of like The Abomination to Bruce Banner’s Hulk.

It’s laughably bad, with bright blue spandex, fake rubber wings, and some really awful action choreography. With that said, if you’re up for the torture or just in anticipation of Joe Johnston’s upcoming (and hopefully better) adaptation, The First Avenger: Captain America, this will do the trick. If you don’t believe us, take a look at a clip from the film after the jump.

Johnston starts filming "Captain America" in June

January, 3. 2010.

Director Joe "The Wolfman" Johnston has confirmed that his comic book adaptation "Captain America: First Avenger", produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige, will start filming June 2010, from a screenplay by "Chronicles Of Narnia" writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Created in 1941 by artist Jack "King" Kirby and writer Joe Simon for Timely Comics, 'Captain America' was 'Steve Rogers', rejected by the Army during WW II because he was too sickly, only to come back as a determined volunteer for a steroidal experiment that turned him into a star-spangled, acrobatic, power-punching super-hero.

Paired with an indestructible red white and blue shield, Cap became a patriotic symbol of the Allies' war effort, while fighting his arch-nemesis, the Third Reich's homicidal 'Red Skull'.

During the 1960's, writer Stan Lee and artist Kirby restored Captain America from the 1940's, in a story revealing he had been lost at sea, then frozen in a block of ice. Cap's unique body structure allowed him to survive in a suspended state, until he was thawed out for Marvel Comics "The Avengers" #4.

Marvel Studios' upcoming self-financed slate of comic book-to-films including "Thor" and "Iron Man 2" intends to build momentum towards an "Avengers" feature in 2011, teaming-up Marvel's most popular costumed super-heroes.
