Roger L. Jackson Returns as the Voice of Ghostface

July, 5. 2010.

To insure authenticity and a coherent throughline in Scream 4, director Wes Craven has once again hired Roger L. Jackson to be the voice behind Ghostface, the long running franchise's signature slasher.

The actor confirmed his participation in the film with Wednesday's Korner, who note that this will be Jackson's fourth consecutive appearance in the series. Here's what he had to say:

"It's a lot of fun, I love the work! It's going to be a great horror sequel."

Is Scream 4 Destined To Fail?

July, 2. 2010.

Then comes the news we reported earlier today and what many are considering the nail in the preverbal coffin. According to Zap2It Kevin Williamson is no longer involved with the revival of the SCREAM movies, and that his SCREAM 4 script has been significantly rewritten by SCREAM 3‘s Ehren Kruger, and not for the better. The site claims that Lauren Graham’s role was reduced so much that indeed that is why actress left production. It’s also noted that Hayden Panetierre’s part, previously described as “really sharp” has been “dumbed down significantly,” leaving Panetierre “beyond frustrated with the changes.”

There has been no reason given for Williamson’s departure, merely a statement that his “involvement with the project has come to an end entirely,” and that that means there won’t be the previously announced SCREAM 5 or 6. No official word has been announced but expect some damage control to happen, and happen soon.

All this begs the question, is this movie needed? The original 1996 SCREAM is one of our personal favorite horror films. It was sharp and slapped the horror movie genre in the face when it so desperately needed it. But the sequels were no where near what the original was and the film itself spawned and entire decade of rip off movies such as “Urban Legend” and “I know what you did Last Summer”. Could this 4th installment and proposed new trilogy really live up to the original or is this just a cash cow, the 90210 remake for a new generation? Blending a bit of the old cast with fresh new faces? We have till next April to find out when the movie is scheduled to premier. Until then stay locked here for all the latest news and rumors as we get them in. And here is hoping Ghostface can make a triumphant return despite all the problems with production.

Hayden Panetierre not pleased with 'dumbed down' role

July, 1. 2010.

All is not well in Woodsboro. As we previously reported, significant script changes have created some tension on the set of "Scream 4."

Lauren Graham's role was so reduced that she dropped out of the project, sources close to the production tell Zap2it. Now it appears that Hayden Panetierre's part has changed as well... and who's at fault may surprise you.

Zap2it has also learned that the slasher flick's script is now in the hands of Ehren Kruger, not the creator of the franchise, Kevin Williamson.

In fact, word is that Williamson's involvement with the project has come to an end entirely -- meaning "Scream 5" is a no-go at this time.

Kruger's writing resume includes "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "The Ring," and more significantly, "Scream 3." While the first two "Scream" movies, penned by Williamson, were adored by fans and critics alike, "Scream 3" was... well, not.

Hayden Panettiere's role, which one source says "used to be really sharp" has now been "dumbed down significantly." The actress is "beyond frustrated with the changes." Another source says that Lake Bell, who had to drop out of "Scream 4" due to scheduling changes, "dodged a bullet."

Alison Brie and Mary McDonnell Sign on to SCREAM 4

July, 1. 2010.

Ghostface is going to have a lot of killing to do in Scream 4.  TheWrap reports that the horror flick has now added two new potential victims to its ensemble: Community’s Alison Brie and Battlestar Galactica’s Mary McDonnell.  TheWrap doesn’t know which characters they’ll be playing, but I’m sure we’ll all know soon enough.  I hope both survive the movie since Brie is too hot to die (yes, I know how slasher movies work) and no one should be able to off Laura Roslyn.  So say we all.

Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, the next entry in the meta-slasher-cum-regular-slasher series has picked up an eclectic cast.  Original stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette will all be returning.  The three will be joined by Emma Roberts who plays the lead role of Jill, the cousin of Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott.

Adam Brody, Marley Shelton and Erik Knudsen Cast in Scream 4

July, 1. 2010.

It’s been a tumultuous week for Scream 4, which recently began shooting. A few images and behind the scenes videos hit the internet — not earthshaking stuff, but probably not a good thing for a film that has tried very hard to remain mysterious. And Lake Bell and Lauren Graham both dropped out.

Now there are three new names in the cast: Adam Brody, Marley Shelton and Erik Knudsen. One is a replacement for Lake Bell, and the other two are playing newly revealed roles. THR has the casting info, and says that Marley Shelton (Planet Terror) is taking the role Lake Bell had been negotiating.

Meanwhile, Erik Knudsen (Jericho, Youth in Revolt, Scott Pilgrim vs the World) will play this film’s version of Jamie Kennedy’s character from the first couple films: he’s the kid who knows horror movies and cliches inside and out, and will be comic relief. I don’t know Knudsen’s abilities well enough to judge how this will play.

Adam Brody, meanwhile, will be “a cop recently graduated from college who was raised on the “CSI” TV series.” So it’s safe to guess we’ll be getting some more specific police procedural riffing in the movie, too. I liked Brody a lot in Jennifer’s Body and think he could be a great addition to Scream.

No More Lauren Graham for Scream 4

June, 30. 2010.

The cast is dropping like flies before their characters (possibly) get killed in Scream 4.

The same site that broke the news about actress Lauren Graham's participation in the Wes Craven sequel is now reporting she is bowing out. Ghouls on Film says the reasons are date conflicts and script changes.

Graham isn't the first to walk away. Lake Bell departed the project last week.

New Rotted Ghostface Mask?

June, 29. 2010.

Our friends at Scream Trilogy have cobbled together a series of Tweets from Ghostface’s manufacturer, R.J. Torbert:

I expect there to be 2 diff masks, however I will say this, things changing very often – difficult to say without giving it away.

Sent out additional GHOSTFACE to the SET today, a very interesting opening scene.

Lets just say, the town of Woodsboro, has an obsession. There is your hint.

First Look: Neve Campbell in Scream 4

June, 28. 2010.

We're just days away from Scream 4 going before cameras, and finally our first glimpse at what the returning Neve Campbell will look like in the flick has come!

Scream 4 starts production

June, 28. 2010.

This morning, cameras rolled on "Scream 4," with Wes Craven once again directing from a script by Kevin Williamson.

From 1996 to 2000, the first "Scream" films helped define horror at a time when it was at a commercial low.  By paying homage to the slasher films of the '80s and then investing them with a decidedly '90s feel, Williamson and Craven managed to bring the entire genre roaring back to life in terms of box-office.  Williamson's influence on the teen genre basically created an entire market, beyond horror even, but "Scream" was ground zero for that.

It is not uncommon for a film to become a phenomenon based on one great idea or one great scene or one great action gag, and in the case of "Scream," it's all about that opening scene.  The winky knowing dialogue, the deconstruction of the genre, the idea of killing Barrymore early... it sent shock waves through its audience.  I'm not saying that's the only thing people liked about the film, but after that opening, there was so much good will built up that the audience would have gone almost anywhere with Craven and Williamson.
